I have really valued the impact of using linguistic phonics and EBLI to strengthen our early literacy practices. Through this approach, I’ve enjoyed watching students build consistent routines in writing -focusing on the formation of letters, connecting sounds to print, and engaging in purposeful, repeated practice of the alphabet. This intentional repetition is not just about memorization; it is helping students internalize letter-sound relationships in a way that is automatic and transferable to both reading and writing. As a result, we are seeing increased confidence and accuracy, as students are more readily able to access sounds, form letters correctly, and apply their knowledge when engaging in authentic literacy tasks. EBLI has provided our students – especially those who need additional literacy support – with both the rigor and confidence to truly read. By focusing on understanding how words work, students are not just memorizing – they are making sense of language. The words they practice are intentional and directly build their reading skills, allowing them to approach new words with confidence, apply their knowledge, and see themselves as capable readers.

It is tragic that so many children are not reading and writing at a level that will allow them to succeed in life. I believe schools and parents are doing the best they can, but still a majority of kids in our state are not proficient. I sought counsel from Shari Most when I was considering EBLI. I expressed hesitation about spending the time and money on EBLI training. She said, “If you know about EBLI and don’t do it, I think it is educational malpractice.” I wasn’t sure at the time if she was correct, but I now agree with her. I only wish that I had found it sooner.

I like how interactive and engaging the entire program is even for high school students.

I have seen many high school students make huge gains in reading through this program; some students have jumped 4 reading levels in a single semester! It helps all students with spelling, reading, and writing, not just our lowest. The rapid progress my students make is almost unbelievable at times with EBLI.

So, so, so easy to implement (low prep) and so very effective. Engages students so behaviors are significantly diminished. EBLI strategies can be applied to all content areas – math, science, social sciences, etc. And works for all grade levels – elementary school, middle school, high school and even adult education.

EBLI is engaging. The students are active participants the entire time. EBLI sets the bar high and has kids working on grade-level text as soon as possible. With other programs, kids are often stuck on CVC words for months or even years. My certification student made dramatic gains in her handwriting and reading fluency. She made smaller gains in writing and spelling, but definitely more progress than I usually see in that time frame.

EBLI truly is rooted in the science of reading and learning and has helped many students who have shown slow reading growth to accelerate this growth and develop a stronger confidence and independence in their English language arts skills. It gives teachers a complete system, practice opportunities, and a community to continue to grow. Eliminating illiteracy and sub-literacy in Colorado is achievable with less time and would support the mental health of so many students (and teachers) as well.
